Die Installation Cousin Maria besteht aus in Marmor geätzten sog. Memes, welche meine Cousine Maria in den letzten 6 Jahren bei Facebook gepostet hat. Diese lernte ich im Zuge eines Aufenthaltes in New York Anfang 2016 kennen.
Bei Facebook postete sie vor allem politische Memes und Wahlkampf Slogans, doch immer wieder auch religiöse und sich nach einer heilen Welt sehnende Memes, die der menschenfeindlichen Propaganda inhaltlich komplett widersprachen.
Für die Installation „Cousin Maria“ wählte ich aus ca. 300 Memes, die sie in den letzten Jahren gepostet hatte, 160 aus, welche ich in einem speziellen Verfahren mit Säure in Marmorfliesen ätzte. Anschließend wurden die so produzierten Reliefs mit roten und blauen permanent Markern koloriert.
Neben den Memes wurden auch die Anzahl der Likes und Kommentare, die die jeweiligen Beiträge erhielten in die Fliesen geätzt. Die Fliesen installierte ich schlussendlich in einem auf Stützen stehenden Kubus.
Der Boden des Kubus ist diagonal von einem Gang durchtrennt, sodass die Betrachter*innen diesen begehen können und komplett von den Facebook-Posts umgeben sind.

The installation „Cousin Maria“ consists of 160 so called memes which were etched into marble tiles. The memes all were posted on Facebook by my cousin Maria over the last 6 years. I got to know Maria briefly in New York in the spring of 2016 and was connected with her on Facebook ever since.
On Facebook her posts were mainly far right political memes and campaign slogans. But she also shared religious memes and innocent often kitschy posts that promoted a harmonic peaceful world, which stood in complete contrast to the inhuman radical propaganda she spread at the same time.
For my installation I made a selection of 160 memes out of a total of over 300. These were then etched into the marble tiles with acid and then colored with permanent markers in red and blue. I also etched the number of likes and comments of every post into the stone.
In the end the tiles were installed in a cube which was standing on pillars. The floor of the cube is cut diagonally and the viewers can walk through it while being completely surrounded by the Facebook posts.
